A Brief History of the Breed
During the late 18th and 19th centuries, dog breeders were focused on creating the perfect dogs for specific purposes, like hunting and sport.
In 1868, Lord Tweedmouth, a British aristocrat in Scotland, wanted a loyal and hardworking gun dog to retrieve shot game—mainly waterfowl and ducks—without damaging them. To achieve this, he crossed a wavy-coated yellow Retriever named Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? Three Golden Retriever puppies, were given fitting names inspired by their yellow coats: Primrose, Crocus, and Cowslip.
The Tweed Water Spaniel, now extinct, played a key role in the development of modern dog breeds. Lord Tweedmouth bred these spaniels with three new retrievers and an Irish Setter to create the Golden Retriever we know today. The rich, red coat of the Red Golden Retriever comes from its Irish Setter lineage.
In 1903, the Golden Retriever was officially recognized by the UK Kennel Club, and by 1908, the breed had made its way to England, quickly gaining popularity as a show dog. The breed was introduced to the U.S., where the American Kennel Club (AKC) registered it in 1925, and the Golden Retriever Club of America was founded in 1938. Today, the Golden Retriever, with its Scottish roots, is the second most popular dog breed in the U.S.
The breed’s first appearance in Canada dates back to 1881, with official registration in 1927. The Golden Retriever Club of Ontario (GRCO) was later established in 1958.
Types of Golden Retriever Dogs
Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, which come in a range of shades. The primary difference among them lies in their coat color, which can vary from almost white to dark golden, with some dogs even having a reddish tint.
Although Golden Retrievers are a purebred breed, not all colors are recognized by major kennel clubs. For example, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the World Canine Organization do not consider Dark Red or Red Golden Retrievers to be part of the official breed standard. As a result, Golden Retrievers with any hint of red in their coat would be disqualified from competing in official show rings.
