DIY Dogs Treat Dispenser: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start with a clean bottle: Find a used plastic bottle and give it a good wash to remove any residue. Be sure to dry it completely.

2. Remove the labels: Peel off any labels, but keep the bottle cap intact.

3. Measure and cut the holes: Take a look at the size of the treats you’ll be using. Use this as a guide to cut two holes on opposite sides of the bottle. The holes should be slightly bigger than the treats, allowing them to fall out when the bottle is moved, but not too large that they spill out easily.

4. Add the treats: Pour your dog’s favorite treats into the bottle through the open top, and then securely screw the lid back on.

5. Time for fun!: Hand the dispenser to your dog and watch as they work out how to get the treats out!

Training Your Dog to Use the Arf Dogs Treat Dispenser

Step 1: Introduce the Button

To train my dog, Pepper, to use the Arf Pets Treat Dispenser, I started by introducing her to just the button. After inserting the three batteries and turning it on, I tested both sounds it could make (we didn’t have a preference and used both during training).

I began by luring Pepper to the button by holding a treat on top of it. After about 10 minutes, she finally touched it with her nose, and eventually with her paw, applying enough pressure to activate the sound. Once she succeeded, we stopped for the day, and I brought the button out again the next day for a quick review.

Step 2: Reinforce the Behavior

By the second day, Pepper was consistently pressing the button to earn a treat. It takes a bit more pressure than expected, so your dog may need time to learn that simply touching the button isn’t enough—they need to press it firmly. There was some trial and error involved, and I occasionally pressed the button myself to show her how it worked. Eventually, I started only giving treats when the sound was triggered, helping her associate the noise with the reward.

Why Should You Get a Dogs Treat Dispenser for Your Dog?

Dogs with separation anxiety often resort to destructive behaviors like chewing on furniture, defecating indoors, or even self-harming. Punishing them by yelling or hitting only makes their anxiety worse. However, providing mental and physical stimulation can be a much more effective way to help them cope.

Dogs Treat Dispenser

A treat dispenser or feeder ball is a simple yet powerful tool to reduce such behaviors. For example, dogs may instinctively chew on shoes, but a dispenser filled with treats can capture their attention, offering them a rewarding challenge. Instead of chewing on things they shouldn’t, your dog can focus on trying to get treats out of the toy, making playtime both mentally stimulating and satisfying.

Additionally, treat dispensers encourage your dog to think, which exercises their brain and can help prevent cognitive issues like Alzheimer’s. For overweight dogs, treat-dispensing toys offer the added benefit of promoting exercise while managing food portions, helping your pet maintain a healthy weight in a fun, engaging way. Even at home, these dispensers can double as interactive toys, making playtime with your dog more enjoyable and beneficial.

Selecting the Ideal Dog Treat Dispenser

When it came to finding the perfect dog treat dispenser, we focused on a few key factors:

– Durability: With Cooper’s strength and boundless energy, we needed something tough enough to handle his excitement.

– Capacity: It had to hold enough treats to keep Cooper entertained without constant refills.

– Ease of Use: It needed to be simple for both of us, with no complicated setup or operation.

– Engagement: Most importantly, it had to be fun and challenging for Cooper, keeping him mentally stimulated as he earned his treats.

After careful research, we finally found a dispenser that met all our criteria, and the excitement for its arrival was real!

The Benefits of Food Dispensing Toys for Dogs

If you’re not giving your dog food dispensing toys, you’re missing out on an incredible way to improve your dog’s life—and your own!

Dogs are natural hunters and scavengers, designed to work for their food rather than having it served in a bowl without any effort. Food-dispensing toys help bridge the gap between a dog’s instinctual behaviors and their more sedentary modern lifestyle. These toys engage your dog’s mind and body, making them work for their food by pawing, shaking, rolling, or licking to get the treats out.
